Same Day Crowns vs. Traditional Dental Crowns

CEREC Standard Crowns
Number of Appointments Just one! Of course, there will be an initial consultation during which no dental work is performed. At this time, Dr. Hoffman will determine whether CEREC is the right procedure. But once this consult is complete, your teeth will be prepped, you’ll undergo impressions, the crowns will be made, and the permanent crowns will be placed – all within a single appointment. 2+. After the consultation, there will be an appointment during which your teeth are prepped for crowns and impressions are taken. These impressions are then sent to a dental lab, which fabricates the crowns. Once they are complete, you will return to the office to have your temporaries removed and your permanent crowns placed. If the crowns need to be reworked or the fit isn’t quite right, another appointment might be necessary.
Temporaries? Not necessary. Since you will receive your permanent crowns during the same appointment that your teeth are prepped, you won’t need to spend any time in between without your permanent restorations. Necessary. With the time you’ll need to spend between tooth prep and crown placement, you’ll need temporaries to build out your smile and allow for normal dental function. Temporaries can cause some anxiety and frustration, as they require certain care to remain in place.
Process Length A few hours. Between the time that your teeth are prepped and when you receive your final restorations, you’re welcome to relax in the office, run errands, or stop by home. 1-2 weeks. We will not be able to schedule your final appointment until the crowns return from the lab, which can take a little time.
Level of Control Total control. Because CEREC crowns are fabricated in our office, Dr. Hoffman can monitor the process and make any tweaks necessary. Some control. While we take the impressions, we can’t watch over the crown fabrication process, so Dr. Hoffman doesn’t have complete control over the results.
